EXCERPT: I stepped closer to the young girl who looked timidly up at me.

they okay?” she asked. “Do they look fine?”
“Very
fine, everything looks like it’s where it should be.” Boy, did it ever. “But, you do realize I have to touch them in
order to do a proper exam just like in the poster, right?”
She
nodded, swallowing hard. “Okay.”
I
asked her to put her right arm back over her head, explaining that doing so
helped to even the breast tissue out and made for a more effective exam.
Lorna
nodded, looking apprehensive.
“Now,
I’m going to place the flats of my fingers on your breast and move them around
in a circle. Basically, I’m trying to feel if there’s anything unusual there.”
Lorna
nodded, looking terrified now. Poor girl, but there was no help for it and,
once this exam was over, she would be much more comfortable with herself and
her body. I could virtually guarantee it. It’s why I was so good with new
patients.
